On time

Several departments within the City have already started tracking their energy usage in preparation for future energy audits.

Description

All municipal buildings will be required to report their energy usage on an annual basis. This strategy will increase transparency, raise awareness about building energy consumption, and ultimately result in cost-savings. This strategy expands on existing city efforts to establish such a program.

    Carmel Utilities

Carmel Utilities is actively monitoring energy consumption across all primary operational facilities as part of a comprehensive initiative to identify opportunities for improved efficiency. This strategic effort is aimed at advancing environmental sustainability, promoting responsible resource management, and ensuring the most prudent use of public funds. By analyzing energy usage patterns, the department seeks to implement data-driven improvements that reduce environmental impact, lower operational costs, and ultimately support long-term fiscal responsibility on behalf of its ratepayers.

    Wastewater Treatment Utility

    • Gas usage (reported in both CCF and therms) is being tracked for the Wastewater Treatment Plant, Creekside Lift-Station, and the North Plant.
    • Electric usage (reported in kWh) is being tracked for the 106th Street Lift-Station, Wastewater Treatment Plant, North Plant, and 20 lift-stations.

    Water Utility

    • Gas usage (reported in both CCF and therms) is being tracked for Water Treatment Plants 1, 3, and 4, as well as one of the booster stations.
    • Electric usage (reported in kWh) is being tracked for the wells, booster stations, Water Treatment Plants, water towers, and water storage facilities.

    Household Hazardous Waste Facility

    • Both gas and electric usage is being tracked for the HHW facility.

    EnergyStar Portfolio Manager

Carmel’s Department of Community Services has officially enrolled in the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager program, which is a nationwide energy benchmarking initiative. This effort is part of the City of Carmel's broader goal to track energy usage across municipal facilities and compare our performance to national averages.

The primary objective is to better understand where Carmel stands in terms of energy efficiency and to identify and execute opportunities to reduce our environmental impact.

So far, we have begun gathering 2025 data for Carmel City Hall, including measurements such as electricity usage, water consumption, and waste disposal. Once the full year’s data is collected, ENERGY STAR will generate a performance score that shows how our building compares to similar facilities nationwide. This will help us determine where Carmel can work to be more energy efficient.
